Health department's strategies reduce teenage pregnancy by 15%

Dr Yogan Pillay, Health department’s deputy director-general, has been involved in the antenatal HIV survey for the past 20 years. In 2014 they found that 110 children between 9 - 11 years were pregnant.

This year the department of basic education revealed that 14 49 pupils in Grade 3 - 7 fell pregnant between 2014 and 2016.

Pillay says the department has been working on intensifying effort to address the problem of pre-teen and teen pregnancies.

From 2011 we started teaching Grade 4's about knowing your body which is age appropriate reproductive health lessons.

In 2014 we launched a contraceptive and family planning programme with the Minister of Health and part of that was to ensure that teenagers who are sexually active have access to contraception.

Pillay says over the years they have seen a reduction in a number of women under the age of 18 giving birth in the public sector.

He says 76 000 women under 18 gave birth in the public sector between 2011/12. As a result of the strategies they've put in place, the number was reduced to 64 000 between 2015/16, which dropped by 15%.

We have seen a reduction in the number of teenage pregnancies below the age of 18.
