Former Deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas has resigned as a member of parliament.
The office of the ANC’s Chief Whip has confirmed in a statement that Jonas will no longer serve as MP, and that his resignation took effect last Friday.
The chief whip has lauded Jonas for his dedication.
“Comrade Jonas has served both as Deputy Minister and MP with absolute distinction and dedication. He has also served the movement and the South African people in various capacities over the years. On behalf of the ANC in Parliament we thank comrade Jonas for his selfless service to the movement as its public representative.”
Days after being removed from President Jacob Zuma's Cabinet, the deputy and former finance minister Pravin Gordhan's names no longer appeared on Parliament's website as MPs, giving rise to speculation over the status of their seats in parliament.
Jonas made headlines in 2016 alleging that the Gupta family had approached him in late 2015 to offer him the position of finance minister.
