Heywood: #PeoplesMarch planned for Friday is legal

Member of the Save SA steering committee Mark Heywood says a march calling for the resignation of President Jacob Zuma at Church Square in Pretoria on Friday is legal.

The organization has reacted to a series of reports suggesting that the gathering is unlawful.

Several civil society organisations will convene at Church Square.

Heywood says the organization has been meeting with senior police officials in Pretoria as well as the Chief of Police to make sure there is compliance.

He says there are a however a few details that need to be ironed out.

All that remains is ticking off some administrative details and there is one outstanding issue which is that because we are going to the union buildings we need formal consent from the presidency.

Mark Heywood,Member of the Save SA steering committee

But the march is legal, it is compliant and it is going on.

Mark Heywood,Member of the Save SA steering committee

Responding to threats of violence after members of civil society organisation Save SA were attacked by a group of 10 men on Wednesday evening, Heywood says that they have prioritised the safety of those joining in the protest action.

We are stressing to the police that we need them there in sufficient numbers tomorrow to protect the peaceful march.

Mark Heywood,Member of the Save SA steering committee

We are going to have our own intelligence and surveillance systems tomorrow over the march, not that its necessary but we are taking all of the precautions because people in the ANC are behaving badly...

Mark Heywood,Member of the Save SA steering committee

The faith that we have to have is that the vast majority of people in this country are peaceful and honest and good, and those honest people are going to make their mark the character of this country.
