Tips to assist you if your partner has ADHD

Psychiatrist Dr. Renata Schoeman says symptoms associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder such as impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattentiveness can at times create a breakdown in relationships.

She says a common complaint from adults living with a partner with ADHD is inattentiveness.

They often feel that the responsibility is not shared especially when there are children, they often complain that they have an extra child to take care of.

The inattentiveness causes a lot of communication difficulties and frustration in terms of completing tasks that people say they will do and never do it.

The hyperactivity might make your partner experience you as very tiresome.

Speaking of the lack of social skill in adults with ADHD, Schoeman says it is largely a result of the condition remaining undiagnosed through their childhood. She warns that this can cause isolation.

She says it is important to pursue therapy if your partner suffers from these symptoms.

Here is how she suggests you and your partner can better manage it:

  • See a psychiatrist with special interest in adult ADHD.

  • Make sure that it’s not only medication intervention. Look at therapy as a way to help undo the damage that has already been done, and to help give guidance on how to parent as the condition is genetic.

  • Limit substance abuse and look at healthy diets.
