Gordhan: We need to practice democratic values on a daily basis

Former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan has called on South Africans to embrace and embody the values of democracy every day.

Practicing democracy is different from preaching democracy.

Pravin Gordhan, Former Finance Minister

Democracy means respecting our Constitution and the goals to create a democratic, non-racial, non-sexist South Africa. We need to practice those values on a daily basis.

Gordhan was speaking at the Cape Town memorial for struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada on Thursday afternoon.

He has encouraged "principled politics" and urged citizens to learn to be selfless and warned against a growing consumerist culture in South Africa.

It's going to be a long, hard 20 or 30 years before we can produce the kind of South Africa that we all dream.

Pravin Gordhan, Former Finance Minister

The former finance minster also reflected om what Kathrada would tell active citizens today.

He reaffirmed his position as an ANC cadre after he was axed by President Jacob Zuma last week.

Like me, there are still millions of activists in the country who are still faithful to the Mandela, Sisulu, Tambo, Kathrada ANC. And we remain hopeful that that ANC will be the one that emerges at the end of the difficulties that we currently have.
