Do our children have nature deficit disorder?

Phemelo Motene of the Weekend Breakfast show on 702, chats to creative parenting expert, Nikki Bush about the possibility of children developing nature deficit disorder in a technological world.

Kids today are at risk of suffering from nature deficit disorder.

Nikki Bush, creative parenting expert

Bush says the nature deficit disorder could be brought on as a result of children preferring to remain indoors, allowing them to charge their devices, which they are often glued to.

They are very reliant on electricity if they are reliant on their devices.

Bush adds that when children are constantly indoors they are simultaneously tuning out to nature. She says if children are not in contact with nature they are then likely to not care about it. Bush says she has also noticed that children are not encouraged or exposed to the outdoors by their parents.

Bush suggests outdoor activities such as visiting the zoo, a park, or fun in one's own backyard to promote time spent outside.

Look at the garden, look at something different to the screen.

Bush says exposing children to being comfortable and enjoying the outdoors has its benefits. She also recommends collecting leaves as some form of fun and creativity.

Here are a few of Nikki's favourite ideas for this season: Leaf doodles, leaf mobile/sun catcher, salt crystal leaves, quirky leaf animals, DIY leaf bowl
