Apparent tensions between SACP and ANC play out at Hani memorial

The South African Communist Party (SACP) did not speak at the annual wreath-laying ceremony for its slain leader Chris Hani.

Today marks 24 years since Hani was shot and killed outside his home in Johannesburg, East Rand.

ANC supporters booed second deputy general secretary Solly Mapaila and left the memorial following President Jacob Zuma departure and the start of torrential rains.

EWN's Clement Manyathela reports Mapaila had already made it known that he planned to use the occasion to reiterate the SACP's call for Zuma to step down.

Supporters clad in their ANC regalia booed Mapaila and the crowd could not be contained as they sang songs in support of Zuma, Manyathela explains.

The support was very clear, they just wouldn't stop singing in support of the President. Those politics played out today.

Almost all of them were booing the SACP as they were just about to get on the podium.

As soon as Zuma left, there was this harsh downpour... As the SACP went on stage, the ANC supporters stood up and started booing. They left it at that.
