Mbeki could influence some ANC MPs to vote against Zuma - RDM editor

Rand Daily Mail editor, Ray Hartley, says African National Congress (ANC) Members of Parliament who would want to vote against President Jacob Zuma in the motion of no confidence, have to decide what they would do if the motion fails.

Former president Thabo Mbeki has called on ANC MPs to vote with their conscience ahead of the no confidence vote against Zuma in Parliament next week.

Hartley explains that Mbeki would not have taken a decision against his party if he faced a similar situation when he was still in Parliament.

However, he also says it's important to note that the former president made reference to the ruling of the Constitutional Court on the Nkandla saga, where it explained the place, role, and task of MPs.

If the Constitutional Court had done that while he was president, I suspect he may have gone with that.

Ray Hartley, Rand Daily Mail editor

Hartely says the former president could influence some of the ANC MPs but they will still have to do political calculations before making a decision to vote with the opposition next Tuesday.

They going to make political calculations. If the ANC is able to impose its will on them it would be because they believe that it could cost them.
