Mayor of Tshwane strips Metro police chief's powers

ANC members caused disruptions during the State of the City address last week in Tshwane.

The Mayor of Tshwane, Solly Msimanga, says he has decided to start a process that will see the metro police chief Steven Ngobeni suspended.

Msimanga says it is only council that has the power to suspend Ngobeni, but what he can do is strip him off of his delegated powers.

He says Ngobeni failed to execute the plans that were in place to prevent disruptions during the address. He describes how Ngobeni was seen talking to the former MMC of safety and security, who is his ex-boss, and later got into his car and disappeared.

ANC councillors were boasting, saying they can call whoever they want from Fikile Mbalula to the national police commissioner. They were saying they are in charge of the security of this country and there's nothing we could do to them.

The instruction was given in the morning during the debrief that he will do whatever it takes to make sure there is law and order but when it came to it he was nowhere to be found.

Msimanga says there are unsettling issues with Ngobeni's contract which he is currently investigating.

He says he could not fire him when he took over as mayor because the DA prides itself as a party that adheres to the rule of law. Msimanga says he had hoped they would be able to put their differences aside and build the city.
