Department to ensure taxi operators don't break road rules amid bus strike

The Department of Transport has launched their road safety campaign as millions of South Africans travel over the Easter weekend.

The department has added challenges as the national bus strike could cause disruptions in transport system.

Transport Deputy Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga says they have requested the minibus and taxi industry to assist commuters.

The Gauteng Transport has called on taxi operators who wish to work outside of the province during the Easter weekend to apply for temporary permits for their taxis to operate legally in those areas.

We are monitoring the situation very closely.

Sindisiwe Chikunga, Transport deputy minister

We believe those temporary permits will assist us in ensuring that we transport people travelling from Gauteng to far away areas that would have used buses.

Sindisiwe Chikunga, Transport deputy minister

The message to the taxi industry is that this should not excite them. They should do it ensuring that taxis are roadworthy, drivers find time to rest and ensure that people don't die on the roads.

Sindisiwe Chikunga, Transport deputy minister
