Numsa not backing down from 15% salary hike demand for bus drivers

Many people were battling to find transport to get to work on Wednesday morning as bus drivers embarked on a national strike demanding a salary increase and better working conditions.

The National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (Numsa) spokesperson, Phakamile Hlubi, says workers resorted to strike action after the union failed to reach an agreement with employers.

Hlubi says workers are demanding an improvement in working conditions and a 15% salary increase.

She explains that many of their workers work 16-hour shifts for monthly salaries of under R5000.

Putco public relations officer, Witness Mhlongo, says their buses could not operate today.
