"Liberation movements in Africa have dismally failed to serve the people" AIC

The African Independent Congress is one many opposition parties participating in Wednesday's protest to the Union Buildings in Tshwane, calling for President Jacob Zuma to step down from office.

AIC President, Mandla Galo explains his parties reasons for protesting to host of the Midday Report, Stephen Grootes. .

Stephen Grootes: Why are you taking part in this protest?

We are taking part because we want to ensure that at the end of the day the power is transferred back to the people.

Mandla Galo, AIC President

Stephen Grootes: Do you believe Jacob Zuma and the ANC are listening to this protest in any way?

I'm not sure because you'll find that there is an event organised to celebrate the birthday of the President which means therefore they are trying to counteract these activities by the masses of this country.

Mandla Galo, AIC President

Stephen Grootes: You do hold the balance of power in Ekurhuleni, the ANC needs your councilors there to keep Ekurhuleni. You could send a much stronger signal to the ANC by withdrawing your support there, wouldn't that the best way to show your frustration with the President?

You will recall that we have entered into a coalition with the African National Congress because we want the will of the people of Matatiele, to be fulfilled where the people want to be under the administration of Kwa Zulu Natal.

Mandla Galo, AIC President

If that doesn't materialise we indicated that we will put out of the coalition.

Mandla Galo, AIC President

Stephen Grootes: So you wouldn't pull out over the issue of Zuma being the President?

Not really because President Jacob Zuma was elected through Parliament with the majority of the African National Congress MP's, which means President Zuma was imposed by the ANC to the people of this country. Which is why as the African Independent Congress we are calling for an electoral reform, where the people will directly elect their president.

Mandla Galo, AIC President

Stephen Grootes: You have a chance no other party has to send a message to the ANC to make that happen, by removing their power of Ekurhuleni and you're not taking it because Matatiele is more important?

Matatiele is more important.

Mandla Galo, AIC President
