Presidency denies Zuma meeting with Qatar's Emir rescheduled due to protests

The HH Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, and President Jacob Zuma held a meeting on Tuesday evening. According to reports the meeting between the two was meant to happen on Wednesday but was moved to Tuesday.

The Presidency has refuted claims that the meeting was rescheduled to Tuesday evening because of the anti Zuma protests that happened on Wednesday afternoon.

Dr David Monyae, Political Analyst and Co-Director at UJ’s Confucius Institute spoke to Afternoon Drive host, Redi Tlhabi about his.

Monyae says state visits such as these are planned well ahead in advance.

In dealing with state visits we have to understand that this particular visit is a return visit. Last year President Zuma visited Qatar.

Dr. Monyae says during President Zuma's visit to Qatar last year, saw several agreements being signed relating to defense, cooperation, and police, arts as well as heritage and also to strengthen the relationship between the two states.

Qatar is a country that is on the move, a small country, however, I think it punches above its weight as are you aware, whether in airlines or IT.

Dr. Monyae adds South Africa and Qatar share similar interests such as regional security on the African horn and African Union (AU). He says South Africa's strong democracy is likely to be an attractive trait to tighten relations between the two countries.
