Cosatu's Sdumo Dlamini is very conflicted - analyst

The ANC is holding a cadres assembly in Sasolburg, Northern Free state, amid the political developments of the last few weeks.

EWN reporter, Clement Manyathela says this is a meeting where ANC leaders from provincial and national office will be explaining to their members the decision by the National Working Committee to back President Jacob Zuma.

They will be discussing the reasons given by the President for firing Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and the disagreements we have seen amongst ANC leaders.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

While thousands of South Africans were protesting and calling for the President to step down, he was in Kliptown, Soweto, celebrating his 75th birthday.

Manyathela says Zuma was in a good mood telling alliance partners that he is willing to step down but is adamant if he does so he will remain active in ANC branches.

Zuma also told his supporters that they should not be worried when people call him names saying he has been called names for many years to the point where he knows when and when not to be concerned. This is the time where he will not worry he said.

Yesterday we saw a President that was not shaken, that seemed unmoved and reassuring ANC supporters that he is still in control.

Clement Manyathela, EWN reporter

Political analyst, Lukhona Mnguni says it was interesting to see how Zuma no longer received birthday wishes from the likes of Mantashe and others.

Despite calls from Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) for Zuma to step down, its president Sdumo Dlamini attended his birthday celebration and showed him unwavering support.

Mnguni says Sdumo was talking in his personal capacity and not on behalf of the federation.

Sdumo is very conflicted. I think personally Sdumo feels a very close bond to President Zuma and it must've been very difficult for him to be in a position where he had to call for the President to step down

Lukhona Mnguni, Political analyst

He wished him well, he wished him strength in this difficult times. I think he realised these were difficult times. He tried to tread a very careful line.
