Dark clouds hung over the SABC during the Hlaudi years - Save Our SABC Coalition

The South African Broadcasting Corporation has been marred with controversies over the past few months. The broadcasters finances have also taken a knock.

All eyes will be on the newly appointed SABC interim board to see if their intervention can save the public broadcaster.

Duduetsang Makuse, Coordinator at Save Our SABC Coalition speaks to Azania Mosaka about the state of affairs at the state broadcaster.

Makuse says the interim board has their hands full.

It's a really complicated mess they are inheriting.

Makuse says the SABC under Hlaudi Motsoeneng, former COO, reveals a lot fruitless and wasteful expenditure.

What we have realised over the past couple of years the SABC management has always come out to the public and given a very glowing picture of what's going on operationally.

And sort of gone our of their way saying to the people, everything is under control.

Makuse adds that despite the previous management's efforts to present the broadcaster as an operational entity, behind closed doors they made questionable business decisions, removing processes that would allow for accountability and thus more measured control on the finances.

These are all things that happened during the Hlaudi years.

Some have even likened this to the 2008/2009 meltdown when they needed a bail out.

Makuse adds that cooperate governance is important in running an institution effectively, something which was lacking at the SABC.
