SANBS facing blood Type O shortage

The South African National Blood Service says while thousands of donors have come forward, South Africa’s blood stock is still running low.

The organisation says the looming Easter long weekend will certainly put additional pressure on the national blood supply.

Last week, supplies were at just 1.6 days worth of Group O blood stock, amounting to just over 1 500 units of O blood available around the country.

Regional Marketing Manager of SANBS, Ivor Hobbs says to operate on an optimal level they need a five day supply.

We have recovered a little bit, this morning the blood stock levels were at about 2.6 days.

So we are ok but we do want people to still come forward and donate blood.

Hobbs says while there are eight blood types, all of which are important, the group O type can be given to patients of other blood groups and is needed during medical emergencies when urgent blood transfusions are required.
