Two Oceans: Political regalia and insignia will not be allowed at the race

Organisers of the Old Mutual Two Oceans ultra-marathon say political campaigning will not be allowed at this weekend’s race.

This follows calls from organisations to have those running in the race wear a black arm band showing unhappiness with poor leadership in the country.

SaveSA and SA First Forum and other organisations' online posters have been encouraging participants in the Two Oceans Marathon to wear a black armband.

Chairperson of the Two Oceans Marathon, David Maralack says the decision is based on regulation.

We race under the auspices of the IAAF regulations as well as the ASA regulations.

Alternatively any party political activities are not permitted at any of our races and we are compelled to comply by that rule.

Maralack says they have communicated this to Save SA and insist that the distribution of flyers, and participants wearing a political part’s regalia or insignia will be barred from the venue.

We have come to a compromise to just a little bit away form the entrance of the convention center where they are able to do that, as long as they do not do it on our premises.

David Maralack, Chairperson of the Two Oceans Marathon

We want to focus on the runners. We strive to unite people not divide people and that is the ethos and the spirit in which Athletics South Africa brought in this rule.
