SA-born Prof George Philander wins prestigious award.

Prof George Philander was born in Caledon. Professor Philander was kicked out of Rondebosch by then apartheid government and forced into Athlone. Professor Philander says he was inspired by his father, PJ Philander, a principal of Belgravia High School, to pursue his love for the sciences.

Earlier this year Professor Philander was jointly awarded the 2017 Vetlesen Prize, for his work done in understanding the El Nino weather phenomenon.

Professor Philander is also said to have popularized the term "La Nina," meaning the polar opposite of El Nino.
