The Hawks have confirmed that its former head Berning Ntlemeza will not be reporting for duty on Tuesday. On Sunday the City Press reported that Ntlemeza has refused leave office, saying only Parliament can fire him.
This follows the High Court ruling that Ntlemeza vacate his office immediately. Yolisa Matakata has since replaced him as the acting Hawks boss.
Eyewitness News reporter Barry Bateman says Ntlemeza is not expected to report for duty and is currently on leave.
He didn't appear as was reported over the weekend, we are told firstly by the Hawks officials that he is away until next week Monday. He is apparently coming in next week Monday.— Barry Bateman, EWN reporter
It is uncertain if Ntlemeza has been employed in another position within the investigative unit.
He is certainly not the head of the Hawks...He hasn’t been fired, he hasn’t been suspended, he simply was never appointed and that is what the court has found…He has actually been on retirement for 18 months, he just doesn’t know it.— Barry Bateman, EWN reporter
