Analysts predict UK's early election could strengthen Theresa May's position

British Prime Minister Theresa May has called for an early election on 8 June which may strengthen her position.

EWN's UK correspondent Peter Anderson says many believe that May saw a snap election as being too good an opportunity to miss.

Many people are saying she saw this an an opportunity which was just too good to miss with her Conservative Party so far ahead in the polls and being very keen to strengthen her position as the UK embarks on key negotiations of Brexit.

Many people are predicting that May may be in a much stronger position once voters cast their ballots on June 8.

Peter Anderson, EWN's UK correspondent

May said she would introduce legislation on Wednesday to pave the way for the early election.

The Prime Minister's ruling Conservative Party currently enjoys a record lead in the polls and analysts predict that the election may solidify her position.

She says it is the only way to guarantee political stability for years ahead as Britain negotiates its way out of the European Union.

The UK is not due to go to the polls until 2020 under the current legislation, Anderson explains.
