Demarcation ruling does not justify disruptions in Vuwani - Limpopo government

The Limpopo government says a flare up of protests in Vuwani over the Municipal Demarcation Board's decision not to incorporate it into a new municipality, does not justify a continued shutdown by protesters. .

Tensions resurfaced this week affecting teaching and operations in the area.

On Tuesday, two people burnt to death after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a pipe used to barricade a road in the town.

Thousands of pupils have missed school due to alleged intimidation by protesters.

Limpopo government spokesperson Phuti Seloba says the demarcation board has urged residents to wait until the next local government election.

To us no matter how justifiable their cause may be, the fact that the outcome was not favorable to them doesn't justify any form of disruption. Remember last year as a provincial government we spent a million taking learners from that area to the camps.

Phuti Seloba, Spokesperson for the Limpopo government

We can't do the same this year, we need to make sure that people there are responsible, parents are able to release their learners to school and parents who are employed need to go to work. We need to make sure the municipality is operational and functional.

Phuti Seloba, Spokesperson for the Limpopo government

Seloba says more than 50 schools have been affected and an inter-ministerial team will be monitoring the situation to resolve matters as soon as possible.

We are continuously sending out information and moving from village to village so people understand the current status. The issue of saying municipal borders, those are actually imaginary borders.

Phuti Seloba, Spokesperson for the Limpopo government

We asked people, what do you stand to lose if you are in a new municipality, what do you stand to gain if you go back to Makhado?....It is very critical as government that we talk directly into the ear of the residents and make sure people understand the situation and options that are available.

Phuti Seloba, Spokesperson for the Limpopo government
