Competition Commission calls on Icasa to probe dodgy cellphone pricing practices

The Competition Commission has opted not to prosecute a complaint lodged by Cell C in 2013 against Vodacom and MTN for anti-competitive conduct.

The complaint was dropped due to insufficient evidence required to successfully prosecute, explains commission spokesperson Sipho Ngwenya.

There were features in the mobile space that we not too comfortable with, even though in the end we felt that the prospects on this case did not encourage us to go to the tribunal because we felt that there was insufficient evidence.

The Competition Commission says that there needs to be a broad look at the state of competition in the South Africa’s mobile telephone market.

Ngwenya explains that the commission is concerned with the differential pricing of mobile products and barriers to entry in the market, especially for smaller players.

He says the commission has approached communications regulator Icasa to investigate further and intervene in the matter.
