Are statues outdated? Prof Brenda Schmahmann says they are

The City of Cape Town plans to honour former president Nelson Mandela with a R3.5m statue and exhibition at the City Hall

Prof Brenda Schmahmann, of the University of Johannesburg is on the radio air to talk about memorialising strategies that are more innovative and interesting than what the City of Cape Town appear to have in mind, which is to erect a statue of former President Nelson Mandela.

Schmahmann says there are far more interesting ways to memorialise Nelson Mandela.

I don't think that one wants just a representation of Mandela in such a literal way and using an outdated, authoritarian language.
