Sarafina performance cancelled due to cast not being paid on time

At least one performance of Sarafina which is currently showing at the State Theater was cancelled on Wednesday.

While there have been speculations that the cast is on strike, Norman Qobola, of Committed Arts, the company running the production, told Stephen Grootes on The Midday report that this is not so.

He explained that the cast is just concerned over late payments.

He says a meeting was held late on Wednesday in which the actors were promised that payments would be processed later on Thursday.

The production receives a grant from the Department of Arts and Culture and it was confirmed on Thursday morning that the money will be paid to the production, says Qobola.

When you have the grant you do your budgeting based on the grant you have. The only challenge is that when the payments don't come in on time then you end up having cash flow problems from time to time.

Qobola says that they are also expecting ticket sales money from Computicket but the numbers are not as good as they expected.
