'We don’t have to sugar-coat anything! We need straight forward symbolism!'

The message in the painting is simple and clear: the country and everything we fought for before ’94, and post ’94, is constantly and continuously being raped by this rapist president of ours.

Ayanda Mabulu

The Nelson Mandela Foundation notes the public outrage it has caused, and appreciates that the public is offended by it. The Foundation would like to express that it respects Mr Mabulu's right to the freedom of expression. We however find this painting distasteful.

Artist Ayanda Mabulu’s latest artwork portrays a laughing President Jacob Zuma having anal sex with former President Nelson Mandela.

To say the work is sparking controversy is an understatement.

A number of Mabulu's works feature Zuma in revealing or sexually explicit positions.

The painting has drawn widespread condemnation, with many people saying he's crossed the line by drawing Madiba in the way he has.

Koketso Sachane interviewed Mabulu.

Listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for quotes from it).

He [President Jacob Zuma] needs to be thrown in jail.

Ayanda Mabulu

President Mandela represents everything we aspired to be.

Ayanda Mabulu

When Jacob Zuma raped Khwezi he didn’t even care about how she was covered or portrayed.

Ayanda Mabulu

He doesn’t even care about the marginalised in this country! We don’t have to sugar-coat anything!

Ayanda Mabulu

We need to use straight forward symbolism.

Ayanda Mabulu

Why are you [Jacob Zuma] using your power to loot and steal?

Ayanda Mabulu

South Africans need to make sure that the President is removed!

Ayanda Mabulu

We cannot continue to blame the past Government. The people who are doing the damage is the current ANC Government!

Ayanda Mabulu

Culture is manmade! We need to evolve! Culture must be criticised, destroyed and rebuilt.

Ayanda Mabulu

The Nelson Mandela Foundation understands how it feels to be under same guillotine that we are under Jacob Zuma.

Ayanda Mabulu

There is nothing tasteful about what’s happening right now in the country under the leadership of Jacob Zuma.

Ayanda Mabulu

It’s a pity that you used Mandela.

CapeTalk listener

Mandela is not superior to any citizen of this country. He knew that! Mandela is the image of post-94; that’s why I used him.

Ayanda Mabulu

The message of the painting… let us not blame the oppressed!
