WC hopes lie in water indaba with just 11% usable water left

The Western Cape is facing what is described as the worst drought in history.

Average water levels in dams have dropped to 22.1% , leaving about 11.1% of usable water.

Spokesperson to Minister Anton Bredell, James-Brent Styan, says there's a Water Indaba scheduled for May 16, 2017 where experts will be coming together to talk about different solutions to the water crisis.

The problem with government is money. We have a whole lot of things we would like to do but it will cost a whole lot, for example, the building of a desalination plant.

James-Brent Styan, spokesperson at Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning

Styan says plans need to be put in place very fast as the Western Cape's population is expected to grow by 200 million people in the next 15 years.

We have to start making tough decisions

The City is planning to drill boreholes to access the Table Mountain and Cape Flats aquifers as a solution to water problems.

However, Styan says it is not as easy as it sounds because its a mission they have to be cautious about it.

If you mess the aquifers up that is going to cause enormous damage over a long term period which is probably irreparable.
