50% hike in Easter road deaths

Transport Minister Joe Maswanganyi says the number of people who died on South Africa's roads over the Easter period has increased by over 50%.

Maswaganyi released the Easter road deaths stats on Friday in Tshwane. 255 people died on South Africa's roads, compared to 187 the same period last year. He says it takes a while to tally the final figures and the total is likely to increase.

EWN Masego Rahlagasays reports Maswaganyi cited driver behaviour as the main cause of road carnage.

The minister is saying the behaviour of these drivers and passengers who are not fastening their seat belts and the pedestrians who are jay walking where they are not supposed to.

Masego Rahlaga, EWN reporter

Rahlaga says the minister plans to reduce the numbers by implementing harsher rules for those infringing the rules of the road.

AA's Layton Beard says the Easter road deaths statistics are shocking and completely unacceptable.

We call on government to do more in terms of education and road traffic enforcement. Ultimately drivers also need to take a serious look at themselves.

Layton Beard, Spokesperson for Automobile Association of South Africa

Beard says the country needs more active policing of road rule violations rather than relying on metro police to check expired license disks.
