Vavi's new union federation is worker focused rather than political
New labour federation, South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU), is currently holding its founding congress in Boksburg, Gauteng.
The politically independent federation is led by the former Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) secretary general, Zwelinzima Vavi.
Former Cosatu unions, the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) and Food and Allied Workers Union (Fawu), are the new federation’s largest affiliates.
According EWN reporter Clement Manyathela, there are about 24 unions that have joined under the federation.
