At least 17 pupils have died in a minibus taxi crash outside Bronkhorstspruit, east of Pretoria, on Friday afternoon.
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi confirmed that a truck collided with a minibus taxi full with learners before catching alight.
Lesufi says he's saddened by the horrific crash and called it "a dark day for education."
Police are on the scene and Lesufi says the official death toll will be conformed after paramedics have made their assessments.
The MEC says officials are working to alert the affected families and provide the necessary support services.
Lesufi says the vehicle was allegedly overloaded with roughly 23 passengers on board.
He thanked authorities and members of society for their support.
