'Nick Durandt was larger than boxing'

Fans and industry colleagues are mourning the passing of veteran boxing coach Nick Durandt.

Durandt was killed in a motorcycle accident on Friday whilst riding in Clarens, in the Free State.

While he is renowned for producing a record number of South African champions, including 38 world champions and 27 international champions, Boxing Correspondent Peter Leopeng says his flamboyance and straight talk, made him a loved character.

Dare I say he was larger than boxing.

Even people who didn't follow boxing knew who Nick Durandt was

He was controversial. He either liked you or he didn't like you and he would tell you straight if he didn't like you. He had run-ins with boxing promoters, boxers themselves, journalists including myself. There was a time he was not talking to me but later on we were very good friends.

I was telling someone the other day he is the only boxing trainer who was ever given a red card....an unbelievable man.

Trainer Harold Volbrecht says the lack of talent in this country killed Durandt's passion for the sport.

Volbrecht has told Eyewitness News he's always known Durandt to be one of the best trainers.

“Durandt was a good manager. In our days boxing was very popular, every guy who was at the gym had the potential of being a champion, unfortunately today it’s not the same thing and I think Nick lost interest.”
