South Africa Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) secretary general, Zwelinzima Vavi, says the new union federation will not exclude interests of the unemployed.
Vavi says they want workers across sectors to be able to fight shoulder-to-shoulder on common issues affecting them.
Saftu held its founding congress in Boksburg over the weekend, launched with 21 affiliate unions in attendance.
We have social responsibility to the unemployed.— Zwelinzima Vavi, Saftu secretary general
We don't want to focus to the narrow interests of our members. We have deliberately made a constitution that ensures workers can fight shoulder-to-shoulder with one another on a range of common issues, for example the issue of unemployed can't be left to the unemployed.— Zwelinzima Vavi, Saftu secretary general
