Transport MEC slams RTMC after 20 die in mini-bus crash

Western Cape Transport MEC Donald Grant says the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) needs to pull up its socks in managing South Africa's roads.

Grant was responding to the news of 18 school children and two adults who died after a minibus-taxi collided with a truck and burst into flames in Bronkhorstspruit, Gauteng.

There is a break down between provincial authorities and local authorities in terms of law enforcement.

He says he is happy that the new Minister of Transport, Joe Maswaganyi, is working on making changes and has the people's best interests at heart.

The minister has announced that his department has started a parliamentary process to consult on the Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences (Aarto) Amendment Bill.

Grant alluded to some of the strategies they have implemented in the Western Cape to ensure the safety of motorists on the province's routes.

He says it is also up to the drivers to pull up their socks and drive with caution.
