HuffPo SA will have difficulty appealing Ombud ruling - media law expert

Media lawyer at Section 27, Melissa Moore, says it would be difficult for the Huffington Post South Africa to appeal the decision of the Press Ombudsman.

The press ombudsman, Johan Retief, ordered Huffington Post South Africa to unreservedly apologise for the publication of the blog titled Could It Be Time To Deny White Men The Franchise.

The ombudsman found that the blog, which argued that white people should not be allowed to vote, was discriminatory and constituted hate speech.

Retief also criticised editor, Verashni Pillay, who has now resigned, for publishing the piece and failing to verify the author.
