Van Breda's trial started in the Western Cape High Court on Monday, reports EWN's Giovanna Gerbi.

He pleaded not guilty to all of them and was very soft-spoken. He seemed quite humble and he looked very nervous, for the first time.

He is accused of axing to death his parents and older brother at their home outside Stellenbosch in January 2015.

He also faces a charge of attempted murder for severely injuring his sister during the attack and is also alleged to have tampered with the crime scene, Gerbi explains.

Defence lawyer Pieter Botha detailed van Breda's version of events as they unfolded on the night his parents and his older brother were killed - a version which has been disputed by other witnesses.

Photographs of the crime scene will not be made available for the public to see.

Gerbi relays van Breda's version of events and describe the accused's temperament, demeanor and dress code at the trial.
