Journalist Mzilikazi wa Afrika opens up about death threats

Investigative and political journalists in South Africa have become targets when covering high profile stories.

City Press journalist Sipho Masondo, SABC journalist Vuyo Mvoko as well as Sunday Times Mzilikazi wa Afrika are some of the reporters who have been subject to death threats.

In 2016 Mvoko gave a damning testimony to Parliament during the SABC inquiry and then received a text labeling him a traitor and threatening to kill him.

Earlier this month Masondo had serious allegations lodged against him through the press ombudsman, following investigations into the alleged “hijack and capture” of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.

A source allegedly told City Press that Minister Nomvula Mokonyane’s special advisor discussed “what to do with Masondo”.

wa Afrika who has been threatened before in 2011 and is currently under 24-hour protection. This, following a confession from a man who was hired to kill him after he reported that Impulse International had received tenders worth about R1-billion from Eskom.
