The Lawhill Maritime Centre has successfully prepared high school students for careers in maritime studies.
The school has gone on to extend its courses into Kwazulu Natal and the Eastern Cape and is now looking to expand into other African countries.
Pippa Hudson spoke to Debbie Owen, Head of Lawhill Maritime School.
It really is an important sector for our economy but most people have sea blindness, its only a few really passionate people amongst us so we really hoping to convert them.— Debbie Owen, Head of Lawhill Maritime School
The school will soon have its first female alumnus approaching captain status, as well as a position as chief engineer.
