Why Mbalula's fearmongering doesn't inspire confidence

Crime prevention expert Dr Barbara Holtmann has warned that the mandate of the police is not to frighten criminals or "shoot to kill".

This follows after Police Minister Fikile Mbalula told police to “shoot to kill” if they come under fire from criminals.

The minister spoke at a briefing in Pretoria on Tuesday afternoon, where he's discussed his policing strategy.

He was speaking at the Saps training centre in Pretoria and reiterated his warning to criminals that they "will meet fire with fire".

However, Dr Holtmann says the role and function of police is to manage the safety of society in a manner that inspires confidence in citizens.

She says the rhetoric adopted by Mbalula does very little to put South Africans at ease.

If we want to change the circumstance in South Africa, then we have got to stop inviting criminals to up the ante.
