Warder recalls "prison hell" as he retires after four decades at Pollsmoor

Chris Malgas spent most of his adult life at the notorious Pollsmoor prison as a prison warder.

On Friday, Malgas will be walking the corridors for the last time as he will be retiring after dedicating his life working for Pollsmoor over the past 40 years.

He speaks to Abongile Nzelenzele about his experiences working at one of the country's most notorious prisons.

He says a lot of people think life in prison is luxury but in essence it is hell.

Life stands still in prison. In prison you listen to instruction. It is hell because because you stay with 40 people you don't even know and all the time you have to learn new behaviour.

Born in a big family of nine siblings, Malgas's dream was to become a teacher. After his father fell sick and his pay was reduced from R125 to R40 he had to go out to look for a job.

Right on the onset when I walked in to Mossel Bay prison on the April 14, 1977 I was scared.
