Cape Talk host, Kokesto Sachane together with Mesia Gumede, Bob Mabena, and Nick Feinberg spoke about the complexities and realities of blended families.
Gumede is a married father of three, with his eldest son being from a previous relationship. He says he's had to have honest conversations with his eldest son about starting a new family. He also cautions against parents or partners excluding children born from previous relationships from being a part of the new family.
Gumede also emphasises the importance of maintaining a cordial relationship between himself and his eldest son's mother.
Veteran broadcaster, father and husband, Bob Mabena says there can never be a formula in how to create a successful blended family.
I don't think there can ever be a formula in the same sense that there can never be a formula with meeting the right person.— Bob Mabena, Veteran broadcaster, father & husband
Instinct for me is the best thing. You know when your kids are not going to click with someone.— Bob Mabena, Veteran broadcaster, father & husband
Mabena says for someone like him, who has seven children, he didn't expect his wife to get along with all his children. He adds that because his children weren't looking for a mother in his current partner (despite having to play a parental role) that made the family getting along much easier.
