Master Class: Pigeon racing

Pigeon racing is defined as the sport of releasing specially trained racing pigeons, which then return to their homes over a carefully measured distance.

South Africa's very own Mark Kitchenbrand, Owner of Kitchenbrand’s Loft, is a breeder and racer of pigeons. Kitchenbrand even refers to himself as a pigeon fancier.

Kitchenbrand together with his family have the best combined winning results any South African pigeon racing family to date‚ with over 500 race wins to their name.

The first recording of a homing pigeon would be Noah's Ark.

Kitchenbrand goes as far as saying it is the most developed species. He says the racing pigeon can fly 140 kilometres per hour.

He lists some rather impressive traits such as: the ability to smell as far as 900 kilometres, see as far as 50 kilometres on a clear day and even turn its head at a 340 degree angle.
