Aubrey Sekhabi, Artistic Director of Sophiatown, talks to Xolani Gwala about this historical gem on at the Market Theatres, and opening at the State Theatre on Friday.
He says this is more of a drama set to music than a musical, and reminds us of its historical significance against the 1050s backdrop of apartheid forced removals. It first opened in 1986, and is also currently a set work for grade 11.
This combines with memories of the vibrant culture prevalent in Sophiatown at the time is a classic that has relevance today.
We really have to celebrate our classics. These are stories that are timeless.
