Cassini probe snaps photos of Saturn as 20 year mission readies for the end

The Cassini space probe was launched by Nasa in October 1997. Named after Italian astronomer and mathematician who first observed the rings of Saturn in 1675.

Now over 300 years later, a space probe bearing his name, is orbiting the planet of Saturn.

Twenty years after its launch marks the end of its voyage as the world awaited the images that are being received from the probe.

It took seven years to get to Saturn and arrived in 2004.

Dr Amanda Sickafoose, a planetary astronomer at the South African Astronomical Observatory talks to Azania Mosaka about the mission.

We have learned a lot about Saturn's rings and moons. We have discovered new moons...There are 62 moons in total.

Dr Amanda Sickafoose, planetary astronomer at the South African Astronomical Observatory

It's flying in between Saturn and the rings. So it is getting very close to the planet itself with the highest resolution images and unique views of the planet.
