Oldest apple tree found on Table Mountain

The oldest apple tree in South Africa is believed to be located at the very top of Table Mountain.

The tree was discovered by Buks Nel, Tru-Cape's varietal expert, and his colleague Henk Griessel.

Speaking to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies, Nel described the history of this apple tree and how it was planted on Table Mountain.

He says the tree is a 100 years old and on its last legs. To preserve its legacy and history, the team has made new nursery trees made from its buds.

We hope one of the trees will go back into the garden in the cottage at the top of the mountain.
