Freshly Ground's new track sends strong political message

Freshly Ground's new music video begins with a definition of a banana republic from wikipedia:

'Banana republic or banana state is a political science term that describes politically unstable countries in Latin America whose economies are dependent on exporting a limited-resource product, e.g. bananas, minerals, etc." appear on the opening of the newly released Fresh Ground music video.

The song is titled "Banana Republic".

Zolani Mahola, leader singer of Freshly Ground says the band's lyrics have always offered social commentary. She explains that their debut song "doo be doo" came out at a time when there was a lot of hope of upholding South Africa's rainbow nation.

One of the lines in the song is "Politicians have agreed, to honour and obey". We're in 2017 and that doesn't seem to be the reality.

Referring to politicians, Mahola says actions of the people at the top, do affect those on the ground. She adds that it is the responsibility of the artists and those with public platforms to address political issues.

We want to express ourselves with the view of making a difference.

Zolani Mahola, Leader singer, Freshly Ground

We released the video on Freedom Day. And luckily we are country where we can speak and be heard.
