How to assist displaced victims of xenophobia

Calls were received from concerned South Africans about the well-being of those displaced due to xenophobic attacks that are currently encapsulating some parts of the country, particularly Kwazulu Natal and Gauteng.

Gift of the Givers responded to the needs of those displaced by setting up refugee camps. Gift of the Givers is the largest disaster response NGO in Africa. It was established in 1992 and it has since delivered lifesaving aid in the form of search and rescue teams, medical personnel, medical equipment, medical supplies, medicines, vaccines, anti-malarial medication, high energy and protein supplements, food and water to millions of people in 41 countries, South Africa included.

Here is how you can assist:

Here is a comprehensive list of the basic items to provide some degree of comfort to the displaced foreign nationals. These include floor sheeting or mats for the tents, mattresses, blankets, linen, new clothing and shoes, towels, plastic utensils which to consume cooked meals, sanitary pads, baby diapers, toilet rolls, refuse bags, 20L buckets with lids, toothbrush, toothpaste, body soap, detergents, air freshener, deodorants, baby cereal, bottled water, sweet packs, biscuits, high energy supplements, toys, stationery for children, rice, maize, oil, sugar, beans, tinned fish, tinned beans, jam, peanut butter, bread, cereals in general. Any of these items will be of immense value.

The South African Red Cross Society

The South African Red Cross Society also needs a helping hand. In Durban SARCS is providing hot meals at all sites, clothing, blankets, psychosocial support and telephonic services for the vulnerable at all 3 camps in Westcliffe, Isipingo and Phoenix. In Gauteng, SARCS is providing hot meals at Ellisberg and Germiston Hall for 1500 people.

SARCS is in dire need of non-perishable food items, bread, soup, disposable diapers, baby formula, hygiene packs, sanitary pads, towels, cardboard boxes and porridge.

P.O.P (People of Peace) have organised a relief event for displaced families and individuals affected by xenophobic attacks around South Africa. The event will take place in three towns, (Johannesburg, Durban and CapeTown) at the same time. Taking place on the 27th of April (Freedom day), the event organisers say that all proceeds will go directly to Gift of the Givers and Red Cross.

The event will run for 24 hours in JHB-26-27 APRIL and cost R50 at the door. Online Ticket sales are available through Pulse.
