ANCYL retracts statement and apologizes to Derek Hanekom

Derek Hanekom, ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) member appeared to be in hot with the African National Congress Youth League. Hanekom was accused of saying he was not sure whether he was going to vote for the ruling party in the 2019 elections last Thursday.

The ANCYL then called for the former tourism minister to make a public apology for his comments or resign from the party’s national executive and disciplinary committees. Speaking to Talk Radio 702's, Karima Brown, Hanekom says the ANCYL's spokesperson on Monday apologized and withdrew their comments and call for his resignation because they realized the article on Hanekom's alleged comments was inaccurate.

I think it's very wrong for a youth league spokesperson to go public, make elaborate allegations and hurl insults based on information they never bothered to check.

One thing i will never do in public is to refer to how we might deal with matters of a disciplinary nature.

Hanekom says the leaders of the African National Congress and or leaders of the ANC's National Disciplinary Committee (NDC) make that decision at a national level. He says the ANCYL is accountable to the ANC and it is up to the ANC's National Executive Committee (NEC) to discuss the youth league's statements.
