Suspect killed after 12-hour Nyanga Shoprite hostage drama

Police managed to rescue 10 people who were held hostage inside the Nyanga Junction shopping centre following a tense stand-off between robbers and police.

The hostage situation reportedly lasted for 12 hours and a security guard was critically injured during an exchange of gunfire.

According to EWN reporter Kevin Brandt, the suspects wanted to rob a Shoprite store where Sassa grants were due to be paid out.

During a media briefing on Monday night police confirmed that one of the suspects died while another remained in police custody, says Brandt.
