Medical students feel unprepared to prescribe antibiotics - survey

A survey of final year students in three major medical schools has found that trainee doctors aren't adequately prepared to prescribe antibiotics.

The questionnaire was completed by 289 students at Wits, Free State and UCT medical schools.

Head of the study and author Dr Sean Wasserman says they found that students felt unprepared to prescribe antibiotics.

He says the findings could be motivated by the kind of training they receive and knowledge regarding prescribing antibiotics.

The study was not designed to look at the training but rather at students perception with regards to antibiotics, says Wasserman.

The next step will be to do a situational analysis to determine what kind of training medical students receive about prescribing.

I think the intervention needs to start by researching further - understanding what gets taught and trying to improve things in the context of what the students told us through the study.
