Diagnosis key to curbing SA's high asthma death rate, says Cipla CEO

Today is World Asthma Day - a day dedicated to raising awareness about the prevention and treatment of the condition.

More than 300 million people globally and at least 3.9 million South Africans live with asthma, explains the CEO of Cipla South Africa, Paul Miller.

He says despite the advances in treatment and diagnosis, 250 000 people die from the condition each year.

It's a big issue in South Africa and the tragedy is that we have probably the highest death rate in the world.

Miller explains that diagnosis is key to reducing the number of asthma-related deaths in South Africa, because half of the country's asthmatics are unaware of their condition.

He says only 10% of diagnosed asthmatics who use treatment effectively are able to take control of their therapy and condition.

CapeTalk host Pippa Hudson visited the pharmaceuticals company for a special #WorkingLunch broadcast focusing on asthma.
