MOPSY Strategic Advisors making empowerment meaningful

Mpho Sedibe is the founder and managing director of MOPSY Strategic Advisors a niche BBBEE consultancy that does strategy, programme design, execution.

She explains that MOPSY is dedicated to translating BBBEE legislation into real economic value on both sides of the equation in the workplace.

Sedibe came from a management consulting background at McKinsey when she decided to take a break to think about her future.

I just got to a point where I felt like what I was doing didn't really make a difference... I don't want to die one day not having a narrative that speaks the to value that I added in other people's lives.

When I took my gap period, I kept telling myself that I want to do something that actually makes a difference in the lives of people.

Sedibe explains that she founded MOPSY as a response to the growing need for tailored BBBEE solutions and strategies with real impact.

She laments how many firms design strategies and programmes that advocate fronting without actually empowering black people in a meaningful way.

The sad thing about legislation is that it doesn't incentivise impact, it incentivises compliance.

People were just buying [BBBEE] points, and I wanted to be part of the actual solution-driving.

The first thing: I ask my client what they want to achieve in terms of impact before asking what their aspirational BEE level. Because very frequently those two things aren't related.

Sedibe says she is personally invested in realising economic empowerment and the growth of small business, and believes that she was called for entrepreneurship.
